During your free session, it would be useful for me to get a feel for any expectations you have of supervision. Hopefully, you’ll feel comfortable telling me a bit about your past, both personally and professionally, where are you now, what made you seek supervision, and what you’re hoping supervision can do for you. I would also be interested to know about any specific challenges you have faced or are currently facing. This will help me gain a better understanding of you as an individual.
Even during your initial session, you should start to get a feel for the benefits of supervision. Our sessions will focus on positive growth, including building resilience, identifying and processing challenges, and celebrating your successes. The ultimate aim is for you to form a healthy relationship with your work, your clients and colleagues, and to develop a growth mindset that will aid you throughout your career and help you to maximise your potential.
The supervisory relationship will of course develop as we get to know each other over time, but the introductory session is a good chance for you to experience what it is to be in a safe space and to talk about your work and personal life openly, without fear of judgement. It’s a chance for you to be yourself in a way you may not feel is possible anywhere else. I take an active listening approach, reflecting on what is said so we can process and discuss it through a new lens – establishing good rapport has its foundations in my ability to accept and validate your truth and experiences. Hopefully, you’ll get a feel for this approach during your free session and feel comfortable sharing some of your thoughts and experiences with me.
